OUR AUSSIE WINES
Vines were originally introduced to Australia by settlers in the late eighteenth century. They were planted in sub-tropical regions around Sydney with very poor results. Subsequent efforts in the Hunter Valley some forty years later met with greater success and today Australia produces large quantities of impressive red and white wineas well as dessert wine and fortified wine. There has been a considerable increase in wine production over the last few decades and since the bicentennial year in 1988, the popularity of Australian wines in the UK has become manifest.
All states of Australia produce wine to a greater or lesser extent but the most important are shewn here together with their most important regions:
New South Wales
Hunter Valley
Victoria
Yarra Valley
South Australia
Barossa Valley,
Coonawarra
Western Australia
Margaret River,
Swan River
Most Australian red wines are made from the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Shiraz (Syrah) which are often very successfully blended. For whites, the Chardonnay predominates together with the Sémillon and the lesser known Colombard.
