Archangel Winery
Nestled within a timeless and sensual landscape, Archangel Vineyard sits on two ancient glacial terraces in the Upper Clutha Valley of Central Otago, one of the southern most winegrowing regions in the world. Geological events 30,000 years ago have defined the Archangel landscape, creating soils that are a pastiche of loess, gravel, schist and mineral quartz. Today, the 23 hectare estate nurtures Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling vines. Named after the labour camp ‘Arkhangel’sk, Siberia‘ where two young Polish girls who had not yet met, began a courageous journey to freedom. A parallel journey that took them across many continents, where they encounter similar experiences of displacement and despair, as well as unexpected acts of kindness and compassion. Their tenacity and determination now lives on in their children and grandchildren who founded Archangel vineyard. A labour of love – a legacy of new hopes and dreams and part of the continuing story that began in 1940. Stock of the Chardonnay and Rieslings are now available with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris arriving in the summer. Archangel Riesling 2011 93/100 – 5 STARS (Outstanding quality showing varietal purity and exemplifying regional type) A gorgeous riesling, the wine combines fruit purity with a touch of aged complexity, displaying lemon curd, grapefruit, nectarine and toasty characters on the nose. The palate is ripe, finely textured and flowing, beautifully framed by bright acidity. There is a trace of sweetness but the wine finishes superbly long and elegantly dry. At its best: now to 2020. Sam Kim – Wine Orbit May 2015 Archangel Chardonnay 2012 Elegance and finesse characterizes this inaugural release Chardonnay 2012. Displaying beautiful aromas of peaches and floral notes, with hints of spice, biscuit and butterscotch that echo through to the mid-palate. A seamless, medium-bodied wine with creamy, rounded mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish. Peter Bartle – Winemaker Archangel Halina Riesling 2012 (4 Star Rating) The debut 2012 vintage is a medium style (24 grams/litre residual sugar), grown in the Cromwell Basin. Instantly appealing, it is vibrantly fruity, ripe and concentrated citrusy flavours that linger well. Drink now or cellar. Michael Cooper We will be showing the wines at the London Wine Fair on 3-5 May 2016.
