As part of our ongoing journey to become a more sustainable wine supplier, we’re proud to share that we’re switching our van delivery fleet from diesel to HVO fuel. In doing so, we’ll be reducing our delivery-related emissions by up to 90%.
At EWGA Wines, we’ve always taken our environmental responsibilities seriously. From achieving our ISO 14001 accreditation for environmental management to powering our site with solar panels and switching to an electric sales fleet, sustainability is a key element to our operation.
This move to HVO is the next big step. It brings immediate and measurable impact.
What is HVO Fuel?
HVO Fuel is a renewable, fossil-free diesel alternative made primarily from waste fats and oils. It offers a cleaner-burning solution that can be used in existing diesel engines with minimal or no modifications. That makes it ideal for companies like ours that want to act now rather than wait for future technologies.
HV-What?
The term stands for “Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil” or “Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil”, reflecting its origins over a decade ago when vegetable oils were the main feedstock. In recent years, feedstocks have diversified, now including used cooking oils, animal fats, and other waste materials.
Globally, this fuel is more accurately referred to as Renewable Diesel, but since “HVO” is embedded in European regulations and UK fuel standards, both terms are used interchangeably.
HVO is virtually free from aromatic hydrocarbons, which are among the more polluting compounds in traditional diesel. This means it produces cleaner tailpipe emissions with up to:
- 30% fewer particulates
- 9% less nitrogen oxide (NOx)
- 90% fewer net CO₂ emissions

Why We Chose HVO
“We have long had a desire to improve our scope 3 emissions which are primarily delivery vehicle fuel.”
“Battery technology has not advanced far enough for moving heavy loads on vans as we have proven with our three year trial. We have now discovered HVO fuel, which is a direct swap for diesel. Having sourced a local supplier, we’re now delighted to slash our delivery emissions by 90% and also use fuel which is 100% recycled!”
– Adrian Moeckell, Managing Director of EWGA Wines.
Last week, we received our first delivery of the fuel and now have a dedicated HVO tank safely installed at our Carnforth HQ. This allows us to store the fuel on-site and refill our delivery vans with ease.
Working with Compass Fuels
We’ve partnered with Compass Fuels, a North West-based company that specialises in supplying sustainable, low-carbon fuels. Their expert guidance and commitment to cleaner energy have helped businesses across the UK make the switch to HVO and other alternatives.
This partnership reflects our values. Where possible, we work with local businesses that share our environmental goals.
Another Step on Our Sustainability Journey
“The path to a responsible, accredited, sustainable company has taken 5 years but worth all the time and investment. EWGA can now deliver wine and help deliver a better future all at the same time.”
– adds Adrian Moeckell.
We’re proud to be recognised as a sustainable wine supplier, and our broader Sustainability Strategy outlines how we’re continuing to reduce waste, work with like-minded, sustainable producers, and champion industry progress.
