Wine with Snowflakes

All this cold and frosty weather has prompted me to write my next blog.

Have you ever wondered what the crystals are that you can occasionally find in your wine?

Dine with Bordeaux at The Sun Inn

Dine with Bordeaux at The Sun Inn

Working in the wine trade is a varied, fun and interesting job and one that I’m lucky enough to have. Yesterday, for example, I had our usual Monday morning catch up meeting at head office before spending a bit of time thinking about the evening ahead at the Sun Inn Kirkby Lonsdale. www.sun-inn.info

Recent weeks have been very eventful here at EWGA Wines. Award ceremonies, team-building exercises, new wines and much more!

Award Winners: A number of our wines have picked up awards & / or high scores of late, here’s a selection for your consideration, in no particular order:

Moment de Plaisir IGP Pays d’Oc Cinsault Rosé 2018 – Silver, at three separate competitions in France

En Primeur: We have a comprehensive offer on the outstanding 2018 vintage from Bordeaux. 2018 is easily the best vintage since 2010 & whether you’re a seasoned purchaser or just contemplating dipping your toe into the fine wine ‘futures’ market it’s well worth your consideration. We are also offering some of the stunning 2017 vintage Ports, but you’ll need to act quickly on these! Please contact me directly (jon@ewga.net) for further details.

Tasting Club: The first rule of Tasting Club is you can talk about Tasting Club! We are going to host regular, informal monthly tastings here in the Great Howard Street shop, probably on the last Thursday of each month. These will mostly be hosted by me (Jon) but there will be the occasional guest speaker, hopefully including the ever-popular John Hinkley from Riedel in the not too distant future. Costs will vary dependant on the theme / what’s on offer, but details will be posted by Email in advance. Please Email me directly if you want to be kept informed.

New Listings: There are a few exciting new listings to tell you about:

Las Perdices, Mendoza: A really interesting selection of superb quality & beautifully packaged wines, including Albariño, Ancellotta & Petit Verdot amongst others, from an outstanding producer in Agrelo, Mendoza who was already supplying the juice for our La Bonita Mendoza Malbec... speaking of which…

La Bonita ‘Reserve’ Mendoza Malbec 2018: following the successful launch of our own label Argentine Malbec last year, we have just released a ‘posh’ version which is drinking really well already…

Perrault Père et Fils, Meursault: we have recently started shipping a range of wonderful Burgundies from this small, but perfectly formed Estate based in Meursault, including Puligny & Chassagne Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Mercurey…

Bin Ends: There are still quite a few available if you’re looking for some bargains to top up your wine rack – Email me for an up-to-date list.

*Featured Bin Ends*

Viore Rueda Verdejo-Viura 2017 was £8.95, now £5.99: Rueda, about 40km south west of Valladolid has established itself as one of Spain's most important white wine producing regions. In this example, the local Verdejo grape pairs really well with Rioja's Viura t give a crisp, vibrant, citrussy dry white with hints of fennel & pithy notes...

Puerta Vieja Rioja Reserva 2013 was £13.25, now £9.99: A classic, Tempranillo dominated blend with Mazuelo & Graciano that was aged in oak for 24 months giving a delightfully mellow, savoury red with really good length that is drinking well now, but will keep for another 10 years quite happily...

Wine of the Month: A wine that I have particularly been enjoying this month is In Vino Érotico Coteaux de Beziers Blanc 2018 made by Alma Cersius; a deliciously crisp, fresh, fruity & delicately fragrant blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc & Viognier. Wonderfully full-flavoured yet clean & refreshing – perfect for drinking in the sunshine, so we keep some chilled for you lovely people to pick up on your way home,  natch…
