Van Loveren Wines

Van Loveren Family Vineyards is one of South Africa’s leading family-owned wineries, crafting approachable, award-winning wines in the Robertson Valley since 1937. From bright whites and expressive reds to Cap Classique and sweet wines, Van Loveren combines three generations of heritage with a clear focus on quality, consistency and modern drinkability.

About Van Loveren

Set in the heart of South Africa’s Robertson Valley, Van Loveren has been part of the Retief family since 1937, when Hennie Retief acquired the farm and renamed it after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his wife, Jean van Zyl. What began with sweet wines and wine for brandy has grown into one of South Africa’s best-known family wine businesses, still shaped by long-term family ownership and a clear sense of continuity.

The winery’s modern identity took shape in the 1970s and 1980s, as dry wines and noble varieties became a bigger focus and the Van Loveren label was launched in 1980. From a first release of just 500 cases, the estate developed into a globally recognised producer with a broad portfolio built around reliability, accessibility and strong varietal character.

Today, Van Loveren works with extensive vineyard holdings in Robertson Valley and additional sites in Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland, giving the winery access to more than 18 grape varieties and the flexibility to produce everything from crisp everyday whites to more premium, site-led bottlings. The result is a range that is fruit-forward, commercially strong and designed to appeal across a wide range of consumers and occasions.

There is also a meaningful sustainability story behind the wines. Van Loveren combines quality-focused winemaking with a long-term commitment to responsible production, conservation and community investment, giving the producer substance as well as broad commercial appeal.
